Wien Brennt deals with the emergence of the liberal movement in Austria, giving an overview of the locations of the revolution from 1848 from Vienna to Chernivtsi, their actors and their political goals and examines why this important political movement of the old empire was almost completely forgotten. In the eventful months before the outbreak of the March revolution and the forced dissolution of the Reichstag a year later, the Austrian liberals worked feverishly to create a new society and a new political culture, based on the principles of civil rights and manageable organizational units. The liberals soon encountered a hardened front of public policy in the struggle to implement them
