- Set in Peking, the opera opens with the proclamation that Princess Turandot will become the bride of the royal suitor who can successfully answer three riddles. Unsuccessful suitors lose not only the hand of the princess, but their heads as well. Calaf, a handsome prince who has been travelling the countryside incognito, is so struck by Turandot's beauty that he tries to win her hand
